NTSB: More speed cameras needed on LI

Posted: Updated:
ISLANDIA -

There is a new push to increase the number of speed cameras on Long Island following a report that says speeding is a big factor in deadly crashes.

A report by the National Transportation Safety Board finds speeding caused 112,000 deaths or one-third of all traffic fatalities between 2005 and 2014. The report also states that speeding is as deadly as drunken driving.

Alec Slatky, of AAA, says speed has been the No. 1 cause of fatal accidents on Long Island this past decade. He says speeding is so common that people don't even realize how dangerous it is.

The NTSB recommends that more speed cameras be installed across Long Island to help cut back on the number of deaths. However, not everyone agrees that is a good plan.

Slatky says if the NTSB can prove it wants to add cameras purely for safety reasons then AAA might jump back on board, but he adds it will be an uphill battle.

Both Nassau and Suffolk legislators say although there was state approval to add speed cameras, lawmakers have opted to not move forward.
