Suffolk votes to cut off funding to 2 so-called sober homes

HAUPPAUGE -

The Suffolk Legislature voted to cut off funding to two so-called sober homes which county lawmakers and patient advocates say are mismanaged and unsafe.

The Legislature voted to prohibit the payment of any money from the Department of Social Services to home operators Solutions House and Cion Solutions.

News 12 Long Island first reported on the two so-called sober homes last month, where those in recovery said they saw overcrowding, drug use and a lack of food for tenants.

"If you want to start getting payments again then you have to get up to par and do the right thing," says Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley).

The legislation may end up being challenged by the state because Suffolk County may not have the authority to decide how and where state funds are spent.

News 12 reached an attorney for Cion Solutions, but he hung up before answering any questions. The owner of Solutions House says he will consider legal action if he stops receiving payments through DSS.
