Nassau police see increase in rim, tire thefts

HEMPSTEAD -

Nassau police issued a bulletin to officers saying there’s been an increase in stolen tires and rims in every precinct since May 1.

The bulletin says the thieves work mostly between midnight and 1 a.m. The bulletin urges officers to check out suspicious people and vehicles.

Warren Martz, of Affordable Tires and Wheels in Hempstead, says he has a few customers a week who have been victims. The more common targets are Hondas and Nissans, according to Martz.

Martz says an easy way to protect your tires is to get a set of wheel locks. They cost $40 and come with a key that is needed to loosen tires.

Suffolk police have also apparently seen an increase, including thefts from dealerships in the western part of the county.

Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun says police have made six notable arrests in regard to the crime pattern. Anybody with information on the thefts are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
