Islip Town Board OKs Heartland project zoning change

Posted: Updated:
ISLIP -

The Islip Town Board voted unanimously to approve an application for a change of zoning that will allow the first phase of the Heartland Square Project to move forward.

On the Planning Board's recommendation, the developer can begin building 3,500 apartment units – as well as shops and office space – on just a portion of the massive property at the old Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center.

The board did not green light the original plan, which included 9,000 apartments and 4 million square feet of office and retail space.

The developer told News 12 that the decision is a "victory." They expect to start construction in two years.

Opponents feel the plan is too far-reaching and are worried about transportation and environmental issues.
