Seaford charity helps needy parents, babies

SEAFORD -

A Seaford pantry has more than just food for needy visitors -- it also gives out baby supplies like toys and clothes.

Inside St. Michael and Angels Episcopal Church volunteers say they are providing a blessing for families in need.

It's called the Mother and Child Ministry -- a mission center that distributes food, toys, clothes and other items for babies and older children of struggling parents.

"Even with financial aid, they just can't buy non-food items because it doesn't get covered," says Marisol Ceresa. "So here at the mission center, we wanted to help new parents with all baby-related items, adult toiletries, and we have a food pantry opening shortly."

The mission center is believed to be the first on Long Island that's specifically geared for babies and toddlers. It's funded entirely by donations.

Volunteers pack the items to give out to families twice a week.

"Things they can't afford to buy: body wash, tooth paste, household cleaner, laundry detergent, paper towels, diapers, formula," Ceresa explains. "It's no questions asked. Whoever needs assistance, they're more than welcome to come."

Organizers say between 15 and 20 families come on every distribution day. The mission center is open Thursdays and Sundays.
It also has a summer meal program to provide lunches for children. A community meal program will start in the fall.
