A 23-year-old Greenport man charged with the second-degree murder of a 27-year-old woman was held without bail after a court appearance in Southold Wednesday.
Jaime DeLeon-Tino was arraigned in the death of Michelle Schiavoni, who was found inside her home in Greenport on Monday. According to court documents, Deleon-Tino allegedly "choked his victim with both of his hands until she stopped moving and breathing."
A motive for the killing has not been revealed, but Southold Chief Martin Flatley said the defendant and Schiavoni knew one another. Suffolk police, who are also working on the case, said the two were not in a relationship.
In court, DeLeon-Tino didn't say a word as the judge denied him bail. His family did not comment as they left the courtroom.
Defense attorney Donald Mates claimed there are a lot of problems with the case.
"I can tell you when the facts come out, it is substantially different than what is being alleged," says Mates.
The case will now go before a Suffolk County grand jury.
