A 35-year-old man injured both hands Tuesday in a fireworks accident outside his Fort Salonga home.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at a home on Milemore Drive where he lives with his wife and two young children. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he had several fingers amputated.
"We thought it was maybe like a propane gas explosion -- that's how loud it was," says neighbor Dawn Dolan.
No one else was hurt during the incident, and police did not file charges.
"This was a tragic incident," Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini said.
