Alternatives in place for LIRR riders during 'Summer of Hell'

SYOSSET -

There are multiple transportation alternatives in place for Long Island Rail Road riders during the "Summer of Hell" that begins Monday.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is adding trains and cars when it can, but it also acknowledges that one out of every five LIRR trains bound for Penn Station will be canceled.

Figuring it out may be a challenge, although the LIRR is presenting several options designed to encourage customers to avoid Penn Station. There are several ways riders can arrive at Jamaica, and then navigate the subway system to get to Manhattan or Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, although that has regular Brooklyn travelers concerned due to the expected increase in volume.

There are also multiple park-and-ride bus options scattered throughout the region, and there is even a ferry that will pick up and drop off travelers in Glen Cove.

Meanwhile, in an effort to minimize fallout from the repair work, the MTA is offering free morning rush-hour subway transfers, but that notion won't be reciprocated during the evening rush. The MTA is also offering a fare reduction for some customers who avoid Penn Station.
