Drivers pumped over low gas prices on Fourth of July

Posted: Updated:
MINEOLA -

Drivers on Long Island say they are pumped up about the lowest gas prices on the Fourth of July holiday since 2005.

The average price nationwide for a gallon of regular is $2.23. AAA spokesperson Robert Sinclair Jr. says it’s $2.45 a gallon in Nassau and Suffolk. Sinclair says that’s due to a backfiring of the OPEC oil production cut from last November.

Some drivers are even taking advantage of the extra cash in their pockets and hitting the road.

"We've done a couple of road trips. We've gone to Maryland, we've gone to a couple of different places. With the gas prices being so low, we probably travel more,” says Alfred Ayensu-Ghartey, of Huntington.

The lowest reported gas prices are in South Carolina at $1.90 a gallon.
