While the fourth of July is full of fireworks and fun, it can sometimes be scary and dangerous for our pets.

Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Chief Roy Gross says fear of fireworks is a common fear in many pets.

He suggests keeping your pets in a quiet room with the windows closed if they are prone to fear on the fourth.

“Turn on the TV or radio to drown out some of the noise from the fireworks,” he said.

Gross also recommends keeping fireworks away from pets, since they may mistake them for toys.

He also cautions certain table scraps from holiday barbecues can be harmful to your pet.

Chief Gross also recommends making sure your pet is able to be identified, since the fourth of July is a particular holiday in which pets tend to get loose or run away.
