With the July 4th holiday on a Tuesday, state park officials say they are prepared for extra visitors during the long holiday weekend.
George Gorman, a state park employee, says the parks have the staff to handle the large crowds.
"We have, throughout LI state parks, 500 lifeguards and an additional 1250 seasonal staff that come for summer,” he said.
A combined total of about 140,000 people traveled to Jones and Robert Moses Beach Sunday a lone, park officials say. And some beachgoers tell News 12 they sat in hours of traffic.
Parks officials are encouraging beachgoers to avoid traffic by arriving to the beach early, especially on July 4 for the fireworks show.
