Female fin whale found dead, decomposed on East End beach

A fin whale was discovered dead and decomposing on a Southampton beach.
The remains of the female fin whale was found on the beach near Gibson Lane around 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. It had been spotted in the waters several miles off the coast of Shinnecock Inlet earlier in the week.
The whale appears to have been bitten by sharks, but there aren't any other signs of apparent injury, according to experts. The whale was estimated to be between 40 and 50 feet long.
Biologists are planning to conduct a necropsy on the remains, which are said to be fairly decomposed.
Fin whales are common in the waters off New York, experts say.
