Farmingdale neighbors blame foreclosed home for rat problem

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGDALE -

Neighbors say a foreclosed home in Farmingdale is not only an eyesore – it's attracting rats to the community.

The Lockwood Avenue home was foreclosed on several months ago. The bank, which currently owns the home, boarded it up and recently cleaned out the home – driving the rats out into the community, neighbors say.

Neighbors told News 12 Long Island that they are catching up to four rats a day in traps in their backyards.

The Nassau County Department of Health tells News 12 that its inspectors have been to the foreclosed home twice without finding evidence of rats on the property. The Health Department says that it can't take action without evidence of rats on the abandoned property.

The Health Department recommends residents continue to put out traps or possibly hire an exterminator. It adds that it will continue to monitor the foreclosed home for signs of rat infestation and will take action if rodents are discovered.
