Handicap-accessible van stolen from Hempstead home

HEMPSTEAD -

Police are asking for the public's help to find the person who stole a handicap-accessible van from a home in Hempstead.

The van was stolen from a driveway on Byrd Street in Hempstead last month. Police say it was taken some time between 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 20 and 11 a.m. the next day.

Claire Helfenbein, the owner, uses a wheelchair and tells police the 2007 Chrysler Town & Country had been modified so she could transport her son, who has autism.

"This vehicle ... is my legs," says Helfenbein. "It's how I get around, it's how I do my shopping, it's how I go to church. It's how I take my son to his appointments."

Helfenbein says an extra set of keys that was in her kitchen is also missing, but that she can't imagine who would so such a thing.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
