Power problem led to morning delays on LIRR

JAMAICA -

A power problem led to massive delays on the Long Island Rail Road Tuesday morning.

Two LIRR trains, carrying about a 1,000 passengers, became stuck in the East River tunnel because of power problems on the third rail. Eric Fain, of Babylon, was on one of those trains – the 6:12 a.m. out of Babylon.

"I was sweating. Everyone was getting hot. It was uncomfortable. Definitely, a bad situation," says Fain.

Fain says he sat on the train for a few hours in the dark until it was eventually pulled out of the tunnel.

Since the tunnel was blocked, dozens of eastbound and westbound trains were diverted to other stations or just terminated at Jamaica.

Many commuters had to switch to subways, but several subway lines heading into Manhattan had problems or delays.

LIRR trains were able to start moving again through the tunnels just before noon. They are currently running on or close to schedule.

The delays and cancellations have plagued the rail road over the past few months. Amtrak is planning to repair the aging infrastructure at Penn Station this summer.
