Part of Suffolk beach evacuated after military flare washes up

Part of Smith Point County Park in Shirley was evacuated Sunday after a military marker flare washed up on the beach.
Police say a call reporting the device came in around 9 a.m.
Emergency service officers buried the flare in the sand and detonated it at the scene.
The area was evacuated, but has since reopened.
