Hundreds of Long Islanders hit the pavement in East Northport Saturday to pay tribute to the nation's veterans and fallen heroes.
It marked the 10th annual Corporal Christopher Scherer Memorial Run. The event is named after an East Northport Marine who was killed by a sniper while serving in Afghanistan in 2007.
Scherer's mother says she is overwhelmed by all of the support.
"The community is so supportive.  All the people who come out to do water stops, decorate their homes.  Its a big sacrifice for them.  Their roads are closed and more and more people come out each year, so we're thrilled," she says.
The run also helps raise money to train service dogs for wounded veterans.
