A West Babylon man says he found a dog dead and abandoned on the grassy median of Sunrise Highway in Copiague, after watching a couple dump the body there.
"I was so mad and so upset at the same time," says Damian Wojslaw. "I couldn't even think."
Wojslaw says he and a friend saw the couple pull over in an SUV and leave behind a cloth-wrapped object.
"I noticed it was a gray dog," says Michael Chmielewski, also of West Babylon. "I heard it whimpering and stuff like that, and I saw it move a little bit. I was all worried."
Angered by the incident, the two men followed the couple and took a picture of their license plate with a cellphone. Then they reported the incident to the SPCA. They also posted a picture of the couple's SUV on Facebook in a post that's been shared more than 2,300 times.
Wojslaw says another good Samaritan took the dog to a vet, but it died.
The SPCA chief says a necropsy will be performed on the dog to determine whether abandonment or an act of animal cruelty led to its death.
