Man injured in Centereach shooting; responding officer hurt

A man was injured in a shooting in Centereach early Sunday morning, and a responding officer was injured when his vehicle was struck.
Investigators say a group of men went to a home on North Washington Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. A confrontation erupted between the men and a resident of the home. 
One man was shot. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. His identity has not been released.
As people left the scene, a vehicle struck a police car that was responding to the shooting. The officer in the car was hospitalized with minor injuries and has since been released.
Investigators believe the incident was not random. The incident remains under investigation.
Neighbors in the Centereach community who spoke with News 12 were rattled by the violence.
