Cuomo, Christie call for privatization of Penn Station
Govs. Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey are calling for the privatization of Penn Station.
The governors sent a letter to Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman Thursday saying "Penn Station has gone from bad to worse." They want Amtrak, which owns and operates Penn, to turn over full control of the station to a private operator.
Long Island Rail Road commuters have endured over a month of delays and cancellations due to various issues, ranging from signal problems to derailments.
Delays could worsen this summer after Moorman told New York lawmakers Thursday that emergency track work at Penn Station could cancel as many as 25 percent of the trains going in and out of Penn. There is no word on how many LIRR trains the work would affect.
Amtrak predicts the emergency work will occur between July and August but cautions that the schedule could be revised at any time.
