Bayville family throws Mother's Day party at Cohen's Children's Hospital
A Bayville family who lost their son to cancer helped spread Mother's Day love at Cohen's Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park Wednesday.
Ann and Bill Fetzer, of the Fetzer Foundation, helped organize their annual Mother's Day party at the facility as a way of brightening the day for children and parents alike.
The day featured donated toys and activities for the kids.
The Fetzer family's son Matthew passed away in 2005 at the age of 11 after spending most of his young years battling cancer. Since then, the couple spends several days a month in Long Island cancer wards, giving children and their families a moment of sunshine.
Bill Fetzer says his son dreamed of having parties for other kids when he got better.
"Unfortunately, he can't do it. So, we are going to do it for him. We are keeping his dream alive," says Fetzer.
Police officers from Oyster Bay Cove were also on hand for the Mother's Day celebration.
"These kids don't get a chance to smile as much as they should, so we are here hoping we can help them smile," says Officer Ted Mergel.
