Suspected MS-13 member charged with attempted murder
Police arrested a suspected gang member accused of opening fire on a group of people in Hempstead last summer.
Jose Barahona, a 19-year-old accused of being part of the MS-13 gang, faces five counts of attempted murder in connection with the Aug. 17, 2016 attack on Cameron Avenue. He faces an additional charge of criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors say a second suspect remains at large.
The victims have since recovered from their injuries. They include a 37-year-old man shot in the stomach and a 20-year-old man struck in the hand and foot. Three other targets were not injured.
"It's pretty terrifying," says Gage Greeno, who lives across the street from the scene of the crime. "But, you know, we knew what the area was like when we got here."
MS-13 has been blamed for a spate of killings in Central Islip and Brentwood that has brought national attention to Long Island. In one case, four young men's bodies were found in a Central Islip park.
