WEST BABYLON -

Suffolk County police have arrested a suspected serial car thief.

Surveillance video from April 20 shows a man standing at a Valero gas station in West Babylon, waiting for the person inside a Nissan Altima to leave the vehicle unattended. Police say the suspect, James Ray of Bay Shore, looks around and, when the coast is clear, hops into the driver's seat and takes off.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini says that theft was part of a pattern of incidents in which the suspect would steal a car left running outside an establishment.

Detectives say they were able to track down Reyes after spotting a separate stolen vehicle at a Copiague motel. There, they pulled a suspicious driver in another car. Sini says it was Reyes, driving a third stolen vehicle.

According to Sini, most cars are stolen because the driver leaves the keys in the car unattended.

Reyes is now facing a slew of charges that include fourth-degree grand larceny. He was arraigned Thursday and is is due back in court on Tuesday.
