Holtsville garbage transfer plan withdrawn

A plan to import hundreds of tons of garbage into Holtsville every day has been withdrawn.

A private upstate company, Green Rail Transfer, had applied to ship up to 900 tons of trash to the garbage transfer station on Furrows Road.

It would then be loaded onto train cars, and be moved again out-of-state.

The state announced Tuesday that Green Rail has withdrawn the plan.

Holbrook neighbors are glad, saying there have been long-standing problems with the current facility.

The owners had been fined for operating an illegal mining operation.
