Billy Joel rocks sold-out crowd at new Nassau Coliseum

UNIONDALE -

Billy Joel performed for a sold-out crowd Wednesday night to open the newly renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

A plethora of new food and drink options can be found inside the venue. Upon walking past the box office at the main entrance, there's a Nathan's Famous hot dog hut. To the right is a beer garden featuring pizza from Umberto's. In all, there are more than 30 Long Island restaurants represented.

Mike DelGuidice, the lead singer and pianist of Billy Joel tribute group Big Shot, was also on stage as he's currently a rhythm guitarist and vocalist of the Billy Joel Band.

"I think that everybody's going to be happy. He's never going to disappoint here," he said.

A special banner was raised this week for Joel, recognizing his 33 sold-out shows at the venue.

The Piano Man also played the arena's final show in August, before it closed for its $165 million renovation.

Joel said his first headlining gig was at the Coliseum in the 1970s.
