Police: Farmingdale man threatens to shoot up tax office

A Farmingdale man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly threatening people at the Town of Oyster Bay's Receiver of Taxes Office.

Detectives say Athanasios Athanasiou, 73, became enraged after being penalized with a late charge for a tax payment that was not made on time. Police say he told a town employee he would "come there and shoot people."

Police arrested Athanasiou at his Colonial Drive home and charged him with aggravated harassment.

Athanasiou was released on an appearance ticket and is due in Hempstead court on April 14.

Oyster Bay officials say they provide training to town employees so they can handle phone calls like Wednesday's.
