Activists: Reach of gangs on Long Island is widespread

Community activists say that the issue of gangs on Long Island is more widespread than some may think.

"Some places are more prevalent than others, but this is an epidemic that's going across Long Island," says Luis Almador, of S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth. "It's not just these low socio-economic areas. It's everywhere."

S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth is an organization that tries to reduce gang and youth violence. Another organization that has been committed to combating gangs for decades is the Guardian Angels.

"Unfortunately, law enforcement has a been a dollar short and a day late," says the organization's founder, Curtis Sliwa. "I noticed in today's Newsday they said this is an all-out war... What have you been doing with them for the past 10 years as they've been growing leaps and bounds all over Long Island?"

Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini called the fight against MS-13 a "war" during a news conference Thursday, after the bodies of four young males were found in a Central Islip park. He said their killings were consistent with others connected to the gang.

Activists say Long Island communities need to be committed to change.

"If we don't start putting all our resources together to make these communities better and stronger, this is going to continue to happen," says Sliwa.
