Police: Crime spree suspects arrested during holdup
Police say two armed robbers believed to be connected to a crime spree in Suffolk were arrested for holding up a Dunkin' Donuts in Blue Point Wednesday night.
Police say Andrew Berger, 27, of Williston Park, entered the store on Montauk Highway wearing a mask. Police say a detective surprised Berger in the middle of the holdup. They say Berger pointed his gun at the detective, prompting the detective to fire six shots while taking cover. Berger did not fire back.
A short time later, detectives say they located Berger's alleged accomplice, Matthew McGurk, 25, of Commack, who was waiting in a parked vehicle nearby.
Undercover detectives, acting on information from sources, were already following both men. Police say the men were behind a series of 11 armed robberies occurring in Suffolk County from Dec. 22, 2014 to date. The robberies included gas stations and Dunkin' Donuts locations in Sayville, Farmingville, Bohemia, Holbrook, Huntington Station, Deer Park, Commack, Smithtown, St. James, West Hills and Deer Park.
Both McGurk and Berger have been charged with 12 counts of robbery in the second degree.
McGurk's court-appointed attorney says his client denies "many" of the charges.
Police say both men are heroin addicts and were spending their stolen money on the drug.
Berger held on $1.2 million bail. He has a prior conviction. McGurk was held on $600,000 bail.
