A third student has been diagnosed with MRSA at Rocky Point High School.

School officials say they learned of the first two cases late in December. They notified parents about the most recent case Tuesday on the school website.

The district's superintendent issued a statement saying, "We are following recommendations published by the CDC and have intensified our level of awareness. We are acting out of an abundance of caution in identifying any infections and making sure that they are addressed immediately."

According to the CDC, MRSA - or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus - is a bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. Most MRSA infections are skin infections that can be spread through skin-to-skin contact.
