The board of SUNY trustees has approved the plan to allow Stony Brook University Hospital to become affiliated with Southampton Hospital.
The plan calls for the two hospitals to share some medical, educational and research services.
Officials have said that the merger would mean more jobs, better health care and a general boost in the economy for the East End.
