Massapequa Park family builds backyard ice rink
A Massapequa Park man and lifetime hockey lover is putting the cold weather to good use - he's built a backyard ice rink.
This is the fifth year Pete Galanoudis has built a rink in his backyard, and every year it gets bigger. The current rink took him 20 hours to create. Galanoudis, a children's hockey coach in his spare time, explains that he's been passionate about hockey since he was a boy.
"Team USA beat Team USSR in probably the biggest upset in all of sports and then the Islanders go on to win four straight Stanley Cups, so from that age I was hooked on hockey," says Galanoudis.
The rink is the entire length of their backyard. Neighborhood kids come over and play on the backyard rink for hours straight, keeping the children active in the cold weather. The Galanoudis family welcomes any passionate local player, like Evan Ortolani.
"It's just really cool being able to skate," says Evan. "It has a bunch of logos on the boards too, which is cool."
The family says it depends on the weather, but they plan to keep the rink open until St. Patrick's Day.
