MS-13 member pleads guilty to 2010 murder
An MS-13 gang member pleaded guilty today to murdering his ex-girlfriend.
Juan Garcia admitted to fatally shooting 21-year-old Vanessa Argueta in front of her 2-year-old son in Central Islip in February 2010. Through tears, he told the judge that he killed her because she disrespected him and got rival gang members to attack him.
The toddler, Diego, was also shot and killed moments later by another gang member, Adalberto Guzman. He was sentenced to life in prison last week.
Garcia also said he murdered Argueta to increase his status in MS-13. Garcia was on the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list when he was arrested in Honduras in March.
Garcia faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced on Feb. 6. As part of the plea bargain, he cannot appeal if he gets 45 years or less.
