Concerns over Yik Yak app grow after threats to Long Island schools

There is growing concern over the social media app, Yik Yak, after a series of school threats were posted on the site.
As News 12 has reported, the library at Suffolk Community College in Selden had to be evacuated this week after a Yik Yak post about a gunman inside. The post turned out to be a hoax.
Last month, a 15-year-old was arrested after allegedly using Yik Yak to threaten a shooting at Mount Sinai High School. Mount Sinai school officials have now blocked the use of the app on their school grounds. Lindenhurst High School did the same over the weekend.
Dr. Christopher Gitz, principal of Lindenhurst High School, requested Yik Yak give his school a geo-fence, which blocks access to the app based on a geographical location.
The Yik Yak site currently does not accept geo-fence requests from universities. SCC spokesman Drew Biondo says they are considering banning the app from their Wi-Fi on campus. He says the school has also given strict warning to their students.
A Yik Yak spokesman told News 12 that they do not plan on allowing colleges and universities the option to geo-fence and that it was done at Lindenhurst to protect people under the age of 18.
While Yik Yak says its posts are anonymous, they are not untraceable. After joining, users provide cellphone information. The Yik Yak spokesman says they do cooperate with law enforcement in providing information.
