Essie Bates, family evicted from Roosevelt home after falling victim to mortgage fraud scam

After three decades in their home, a Roosevelt family was evicted Monday after falling victim to a mortgage fraud from two companies.

As News 12 has reported, Essie Bates needed a mortgage loan modification for her Roosevelt home after her mortgage payment ballooned to over $3,000 a month.

She tried to get it modified by the Templeton Group in Westbury and paid them $3,000 up front. The company soon folded without helping Bates much.

She says she then gave Farmingdale-based Home Affordable Direct $6,000, but had the same result. Their office is now closed.

After a yearlong battle, Essie and her daughter Lakashire and three grandchildren were forced to pack up their belongings and leave their home of 34 years.

The family says they are going to have to contact the county's Department of Social Services for help. Lakashire says her 7-year-old son has epilepsy. She says she's concerned about bringing him into any kind of shelter because of his health.

Law enforcement officials say both Templeton Group and Home Affordable Direct are under investigation by authorities.

The company who services the Bates' mortgage has not returned a request to comment on this story.
