A litter of puppies was rescued Friday after they became stuck under a shed in Shirley.
Police say the little pups were born under a shed where neighbors along Starlight Drive believe they were trapped along with their mother and another dog since Thursday.
A neighbor called 911 Friday morning after hearing cries coming from the property.
When police and neighbors arrived at the home, they found one puppy buried under a pile of leaves.
Police heard noises coming from under the floor of a nearby shed. Police and EMS workers had to use power tools to get to the six border collie terrier mixed puppies and the two dogs.
"They were taking them one by one and putting them in a plastic container and wrapping them all up," said neighbor Brian Guilfoil.
The Suffolk SPCA says the rescue effort lasted 1 ½ hours. Police took the newborn pups to a nearby veterinarian and say they are OK.
The owner of the dog did not want to speak on camera.
