An MS-13 gang member was sentenced to life in prison plus 35 years for the execution-style murders of a young mother and her 2-year-old son.
Adalberto Guzman, 22, of Central Islip, was convicted last September of conspiracy, murder and illegal use of weapons for the February 2010 killings of Vanessa Argueta, of Hempstead, and her son, Diego Torres.
Officials say Guzman and two other MS-13 gang members, including Argueta's former boyfriend, lured Argueta and Torres into a wooded area because they felt she had disrespected her former boyfriend. Prosecutors say that after the two other MS-13 members shot and killed Argueta, Guzman shot the 2-year-old twice in the head, saying that the toddler might grow up and seek revenge.
One of the other MS-13 shooters in the case, Rene Mejia, has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
