Police: Handgun found outside Edmund Miles Middle School in Amityville

Officials say a handgun was found on an athletic field at an Amityville school this morning.

Police tell News 12 the gun was found at Edmund Miles Middle School located on Route 110. The school is part of the Amityville School District.

The handgun was discovered by a man who was installing a fence around the athletic field. He says it was lying out in the open, resting against a pole. He called 911, and police arrived to confiscate the weapon and search the grounds.

The man says he saw police remove casings from the gun, but police say it was not loaded with live ammunition. Police say they will be testing the weapon to determine if it was used in any crimes.

The school did not go into lockdown because it was quickly determined that there were no threats to students or staff, according to the superintendent.

Parents who spoke with News 12 were disturbed by the discovery.
