Deepak Kumar, accused of driving high and killing man in New Hyde Park, pleads not guilty

A teen accused of driving high and killing a man in a car accident last month pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges Wednesday.

Police say Deepak Kumar, 17, crashed into a car driven by 55-year-old Pierre Antoine at the corner of Covert and Second avenues on Aug. 19 in New Hyde Park. Antoine, who was from California, had just left LIJ, where he had been visiting his sick mother. Antoine was killed in the crash, and his wife Marta lost her spleen and a kidney and punctured both lungs. Their 6-year-old daughter, Soliana, fractured her leg and pelvis.

"It hurts this kid chose to do something that took my brother's life," says Antoine's brother, Harry.

Kumar's attorney Jan Goldman says his client was not drunk, but did not rule out whether drugs were involved, saying he needs to review hospital records.

Kumar's bail was reduced from $500,000 to $200,000 after Goldman told the judge he is enrolled as a student at Nassau Community College. He is due back in court on Oct. 21.
