Officials: Dog found chained to cinderblock in West Islip canal
A Rottweiler mix was found dead in a canal in West Islip Thursday morning, prompting an investigation by police and the SPCA.
When officials from the Town of Islip Animal Shelter and the Suffolk SPCA arrived on the scene, they say the dog was chained to a cinderblock and possibly drowned alive.
Officials want to know if the dog was dead or alive when it was tossed into the canal. If the necrospy shows the dog was alive at the time, whoever is responsible could face felony charges.
SPCA Chief Roy Gross says the Rottweiler mix was tan and black and about 7 years old.
Anyone with information about the dog is urged to call the Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls are kept confidential.
