Mom-and-pop shops across LI battle big retailers for business

There is a "David versus Goliath" type of battle being fought across the Island on Black Friday as mom-and-pop shops fight the big retailers for a piece of the action.

Jennifer Dolce, of East Setauket, buys most of her jewelry at Gennaros in Bellmore. Dolce says her family has shopped there for years due to the stores service and reputation. Thats the kind of loyalty smaller shops depend on, especially this time of year.

Businesses development consultant Sylvia Chertow says mom-and-pop stores are a reflection of a community. Chertow says a vibrant small biz districts makes a better community and a better residential district.
