Chaminade becomes second Catholic high school to cancel prom

Chaminade has become the second Catholic high school on Long Island to cancel its prom.

Fr. James Williams, president of the school, says that prom culture has become a toxic display that promotes sex and underage drinking and is counter to the schools mission. Earlier this year, Kellenberg Memorial announced it would cancel its prom.

The student reaction to the decision is one of outrage. While the school administration says it will work with students to create an authentic celebration that is more in line with the schools values, many students say they will try and plan an event on their own without school sponsorship.
