Parents blast South Huntington school officials over accused rapist bus driver

South Huntington Superintendent Dr. Thomas Shea shouldered the blame at a school district meeting Wednesday for not immediately suspending a bus driver accused of rape.

Andrew Hamil, 27, was arrested on school property in September and charged with raping a 23-year-old woman. However, district officials say they did not become aware until last week that the grand jury added charges of sex abuse, sodomy and endangering the welfare of a child in October.

Parents are outraged that district officials still waited several days before suspending Hamil Tuesday, even after they became aware of the severity of the charges. Many parents feel the school district betrayed their trust and put their children in danger.
