Congressman makes push to help LIers pay growing home heating bills

One local lawmaker is calling on the government to approve a measure that would give Long Islanders a tax credit to help offset the rising cost of home heating oil prices.

Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) says cutting the tax credit Congress granted to big oil companies on the latest energy bill would fund the proposal. He says the bill unfathomably gives the richest oil companies a $3 billion tax credit.

Meanwhile, a recent report found that most Long Islanders are too rich to qualify for federal heating assistance but too poor to heat their homes.
