LI lawmakers sponsor bill to end custody battles

A new bill that calls for a fair resolution to child custody disputes is making its way through the state Legislature, but not everyone agrees it could work.

St. James resident Diana McCready recently lost custody of her three children. In the state of New York that means she also lost all legal rights to make decisions for her children. State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) believes it doesnt have to be this way. Hes sponsoring a bill that encourages judges to award joint custody instead of sole custody to one parent, which some attorneys say judges do too often to quickly clear their case load. Other family law professionals oppose the bill, saying if parents are headed to court, they obviously couldnt handle joint custody.

If passed, the bill might give parents like McCready a second chance at raising their children under joint custody. The bill is being sponsored in the Senate by Republican Owen Johnson.
