Battered Nassau County mom gets new face

A Nassau County mom has a new lease on life after facial reconstructive surgery repaired 17 years of domestic violence.

The woman, identified as Melissa, underwent a six-and-a-half hour procedure at North Shore LIJ in October to repair a crushed nose bone. The surgery was done for free as part of a program that helps victims of domestic abuse.

Hospital officials say the medical staff at LIJ performs about a dozen free facial reconstructions every year. The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence sponsors each of the surgeries.
