A federal judge ruled Friday in favor of Latino day laborers evicted from their residences in the Town of Brookhaven.

Town officials, in an effort to crack down on illegal residents, began evicting day laborers that were packed into houses over the summer.Town officials said the evictions were necessary because of hazardous conditions present in the overcrowded homes.

The judge ruled that sudden evictions are illegal and filed a preliminary injunction against the eviction of anyone without notice. The judge said in a 42-page statement that such evictions can cause irreparable harm.
