DWI suspect steals police car in Selden

Suffolk police say a 26-year-old man arrested at a DWI checkpoint in Selden stole the police car he was handcuffed in Saturday.

Police say Thomas Elflein, of Florida, was arrested for drunk driving after trying to avoid a DWI checkpoint by pulling into a gas station. Police handcuffed Elflein and placed him in the backseat of the police car. Then, while the arresting officer took information from Elfleins car, Elflein slipped his cuffs from behind his back, escaped from the backseat and drove away in the police car.

Police say they found the car empty a few minutes later in Coram. Elflein was found and arrested a half-mile away after a brief struggle. Elflein now faces charges of DWI, grand larceny and resisting arrest.
