Soldier from West Hempstead killed in Iraq

A 26-year-old soldier from West Hempstead was killed by a bomb in Baghdad Tuesday.

Alice Jones says her only son, Army Specialist Lance Sage, joined the Army in the hopes that the discipline of serving would help provide a better life for him and his mother. Jones, who lives in West Hempstead, said Lance saw his friends going to jail and decided that if he was "going to be a man, [he was] going to be in the army."

Jones says Lance hoped to pursue a career in computers after he finished his tour of duty in 2007. Jones also described Lance as her best friend and said they were inseparable. Funeral arrangements for Sage are not yet finalized.
