Police make progress in breaking down gangs in Wyandanch-Amityville area

Suffolk police say they made major progress in breaking down some gangs in the Wyandanch-Amityville area.

Fourteen people were arrested and 15 weapons were seized during several busts. Authorities say at least nine of those arrested are known gang members. Police officials say they have been targeting the area since June and acknowledge there was a gang turf war. At least 50 reports of gunfire had been reported in the area as well.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says these busts are the first of many. He says police will continue with intensity until all of the gangs are broken.
