Effort underway to make buying renewable energy easier for LI residents

Representatives with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) were out in full force Wednesday campaigning for cleaner energy on Long Island.

NYPIRG representatives say they want residents to understand the benefits of buying renewable energy to power their homes. They teach consumers about new technology, comparative pricing and how to contact providers of clean and green energy.

Scott and Barbara Yanuck installed solar panels to energize their Huntington home. According to the Yanucks, the initial price was approximately $40,000, but with rebates and tax credits the panels wound up only costing approximately $11,000. The Yanucks say they expect the solar panels to pay for themselves in six to 10 years.
